TMJ/TMD Disorders

tmjpainDon Ostdiek, PT has been trained through CRAFTA (Cranial Facial Therapy Academy) relieving symptoms associated with TMJ/TMD and atypical face pain. The focus is on dysfunctions of the head and neck and the influence it has on your daily life activities. If necessary the therapist will work with dentists, oral or maxillofacial surgeon, ENT, orthodontists, etc.

Specific dysfunctions or symptoms:

  • cervicogenic and migraine headaches
  • neck or shoulder pain
  • myofascial pain – which is pain caused by trigger points in muscles in seemingly unrelated parts of your body. This is called referred pain.
  • difficulties with chewing and biting
  • TMJ dysfunction

The symptoms of TMD (temporomandibular dysfunction) are often headaches, neck pain, jaw pain and joint pain. Although TMD pain can be caused by the joint itself, the muscles that control the jaw and those that support the head and neck must be examined as well. These muscles have the ability to refer pain to other areas of your head and neck including the area surrounding the TMJ. This can lead to confusion in identifying the underlying cause of your pain. It has also been shown that the TMJ can refer symptoms to the neck and face region, thereby also causing confusion on the cause of neck pain.

Don Ostdiek, PT offers a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan to help identify and treat the cause of your pain. Don has completed advanced studies through CRAFTA (Cranial Facial Therapy Academy) focusing on craniomandibular and craniofacial dysfunctions and pain. Don will provide treatment and care of patients of all ages of head, neck and/or facial pain. Don will work with your doctor to present a multidisciplinary and professional approach to eliminate suffering and restore life and function.
